Melbourne Dragons FC under 14 boys played in the State Club Futsal Championships on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th April, 2015. The Dragons finished 1st in the group stages with convincing wins with the highlight of the group games being against Bayside where we came from 4-0 down after 12 minutes, 5-2 at half time, 6-3 down to win 8-6 after a spirited display. The team was in a bit of shock as most of the boys came from the less physical under 12 age group in 2014, and it was the older and more physical Bayside that got the early advantage.
“At that point it wasn’t much to do with futsal, they all knew they can play. It was a bout belief! We briefly spoke about some tactical changes and I asked the boys not to panic, be more aggressive, hustle and work hard! I also reiterated that I believed in them, and that they NOW needed to believe in themselves.”
It was the Dragons and Bayside to meet in the final again. Physically, Bayside were much bigger, but never underestimate a Dragon, they are fierce! There was belief from the start and we played the better futsal. In the end it was a good final which we won 4-3.
It was a wonderful 2 days of competition where the players had the opportunity to make new friendships and build on old ones, keep active over the holidays, and grow as individuals and as a team.
I would like to thank the players and parents for putting in the effort to attend and I am sure the experience was worthwhile. The focus now turns to the season start of Victorian Premier Futsal League which will begin in mid-June. Can’t wait for that!
